Metaphor

Metaphor

Metaphor is the comparison of two unlike things. figure of speech which compares two objects. For example:"Ted is a Beast." Metaphor is some what similar to a simile.

"THE FORCE THAT THROUGH THE GREEN FUSE DRIVES THE FLOWER" by Dylan Thomas. This poem has a lot of metaphor in it. The force that through the green fuse drives the flower Drives my green age; that blasts the roots of trees Is my destroyer. This first stanza explains time and young age. Time representing the Fuse, and green age representing young age. The flower representing her. The flower which grew over time. I think this poem has a very strong way of showing metaphor.

In the poem "A Meditaion for His Mistress" by Robert Herrick. It speaks about how a certain someone is comapared to a flower." You are a lovely July-flower, Yet one rude wind or ruffling shower Will force you hence, and in an hour." This simply explains that although she"s is beautiful she could have her moments." You are the queen all flowers among; But die you must, fair maid, ere long, As he, the maker of this song." this stanza shows that she is almost like the only girl in his world. As if she was the one of a kind. However one day one day she must leave. Until that day she is a queen.

Emily (Elizabeth) Dickinson was known for a lot of poems.Although she rather keep that part of her life on a quiet note. Due to http://www.tnellen.com/cybereng/poetry/poems/emily_dickenson.htmlthe fact that she was a big fan of publicity. Almost all of her poems involved metaphors. One of them are "The Stone" which I would say explains some one who feels alone. "How happy is the little stone that rambles in the road alone". " and doesn't care about careers" Which means they really not interested in what they could have become or can become. Another poem that Emily wrote that has metaphors in it would have to be "I Took My Power In My Hand". In this poem the person compared them self to someone or thing that is really strong. "I took my power in my hand and went against the world", this mean she took matters into her own prospectives, did what she decided to do and faced what ever concequences was coming her way. "I was not so much as David had, but I was twice as bold." meaning she might not be as big or tough but her confidence held a big part of her."Escape" by Emily is another poem that shows types of metaphor . "I never hear prisons broadby soldiers battered down. But I tug childish at my bars only to fail again". This means that although she knows what ever she's going through will never be over she tries over and over like a child who never learns.

In this ee cummings ditty: the metaphor is clear. " loneliness, a leaf falls." simply represent someone who use to be in a crowd. However ended up on their own. A leaf who was once on a tree full with other ones, but as it falls it will have to fend for itself. I think this is a very strong metaphor. I strongly agree with it.

In conclusion Metaphor happens in different situations. As for me metaphors work many ways in my life. One way it worked was when I was a little girl. Around the age of nine or ten, I remember it was a nice hot sunny day in Antigua. My cousin and my sister and I were at the beach waiting for my aunt or mother to come pick us up. We didn't see any sign of no one, so we decided to walk.We walked one long road which lead straight back to my home in Antigua. I felt as if I were a egg being fried. When we finally got to our destination, I felt as if i were over cooked. All I needed was a shower and some cold water to go down my throat. I remember this day because it was a day/walk that never seemed to have a end. Metaphor was that i was the egg and the fire which was frying the egg was the sun.
